Chelsea look poised to complete a deal for Nantes
centre-back Papy Djilobodji, with reports suggesting the defender is due
to undergo a medical with the English champions.
The centre-back is a towering presence at
6’4”, and manager Jose Mourinho will be hoping he can add some much
needed authority to what's been a weak defensive setup so far this
season. Chelsea have conceded nine goals in their opening four Premier
League games already.
A 27-year-old Senegal international,
Djilobodji certainly looks like one for the present rather than the
future and could represent excellent value, with the fee reported to be
£2.7 million, per Dominic Fifield of the Guardian.
At Nantes, he has established himself as
one of Ligue 1’s most underrated defenders, and it’ll be intriguing to
see how he fits into the Blues team should a transfer go ahead.
Even with Chelsea’s problems at the back,
it would be a big surprise if Djilobodji was to become an immediate
starter. But he’ll bring some depth to a position where options are
currently thinly spread and out of form.
